In an effort to crack down on impaired driving, the Chula Vista Police Department ran a DUI and driver's license checkpoint last Thursday evening, snagging a couple of inebriated drivers and issuing several citations. The six-hour operation, which took place on the 600 block of Palomar Street from 6 p.m. to midnight, screened hundreds out of the thousands that passed through, highlighting the continuing effort to enhance road safety, per Fox5 San Diego.

The checkpoint resulted in one arrest for drunk driving, one for drug impairment, and a slew of citations, mainly for license-related infractions. According to a statement from the Chula Vista Police Department, officers scrutinized 703 of the 2533 vehicles that traversed the checkpoint, with five drivers subjected to field sobriety tests. An underappreciated aspect of these checkpoints may be the deterrent effect—knowing that police are actively screening may discourage some from getting behind the wheel after drinking.

Chula Vista PD shared the initiative's outcome with the media: 37 citations were issued, and 29 individuals were penalized for driving without a valid or suspended license. In addition, the operation led to the impoundment of six vehicles.

The costs for the checkpoint were footed by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This is part of a concerted push by local authorities to keep potentially dangerous drivers off the street, especially in areas that have been identified as hot spots for DUI-related collisions. The preventative measures serve not only to remove impaired drivers from the road but also to signal a stark warning to those who might consider driving while intoxicated: the risk of getting caught is high.
