The U.S. Coast Guard and Texas Parks & Wildlife Department seized over 2,640 pounds of illegally caught red snapper this Saturday in a sting operation that pinched 20 Mexican fishermen off the South Texas coast. In a sweeping move against illegal fishing practices, authorities discovered five lancha boats crammed with the illicit haul. As described by KSAT, the fishermen were detained and subsequently turned over to U.S. Customs and Border Protection for processing.
The initial nab netted four lanchas north of the Maritime Boundary Line with a catch of approximately 2,090 pounds of red snapper. Coast Guard Capt. Hans Govertsen revealed, "Illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing depletes our precious natural resources, disrupts our economy, and threatens the marine environment.", according to information obtained by The U.S. Coast Guard.
Lanchas, typically spanning 20 to 30 feet in length and capable of speeds topping 30 mph, are notoriously used not only for fishing illegally but also for smuggling drugs across the U.S.-Mexico maritime border. Such illicit activities pose a significant threat to coastal economies and ecosystems alike, meriting a stern response from law enforcement agencies.
In a show of interagency solidarity, TPWD Colonel Chad Jones commended the joint endeavor, stating, "This case is another example of Texas Game Wardens working with partners to protect and conserve Texas’ natural resources." Jones added, as KHOU reports, "We truly appreciate our partnership with the Coast Guard as we patrol the coastal waterways." To those on shore witnessing suspicious or outright illegal fishing activities, authorities are urging the public to play their part by contacting “Operation Game Thief” or the U.S. Coast Guard, depending on the jurisdiction of the waters.
