In a sudden tech shakeup, Jason Straughan has announced his resignation as CEO of Codeup, the San Antonio-based coding bootcamp he co-founded. After a tenure of six years leading the company, Straughan cited the need for differing leadership to guide the company into its next phase. "Sometimes a company needs a strategic visionary, sometimes a company needs an operator," said Straughan on LinkedIn. "I’m a strategy and growth person, but I’m not a good operator."

Codeup, which offers intensive coding sessions ranging from 13 to 22 weeks across Texas, did not respond to requests for comment and has yet to name Straughan's replacement. Despite the departure, Straughan expressed his continuing support and described his time at the company as the peak of his professional life, stating, "The company needs different leadership for the next phase of the journey in service to our students. Thank you for all the wonderful years, memories, and life change. Working on this mission has been the peak of my professional life," in a statement obtained by KSAT.

Earlier this year, Codeup consolidated its operations by merging its two campuses. The move to Petroleum Towers at 8700 Tesoro Drive was notably prompted by Rackspace’s decision to relocate from its Windcrest facility. Straughan's leadership saw the company through expansions, including the opening of a Dallas campus and virtual campuses in Houston and Austin. In what some viewed as a controversial decision, he spearheaded the acquisition of Rackspace Technology’s cloud computing academy in 2021, as noted in an article from Express-News.

The company's transition has not been without its challenges. October saw a layoff of "roughly 25%" of its workforce, a staffing reduction mentioned by a former employee on LinkedIn. Neither Straughan nor co-founder Michael Girdley has commented on these cuts, creating a silence punctuated by Straughan's never-expected exit.

Moving forward without Straughan at the helm marks a significant shift for Codeup. As of yet, no successor has been named to lead the educational venture that, under Straughan's watch, aimed to be at the forefront of tech career entry in Texas. Ileana Gonzalez, CEO of San Antonio tech advocacy group Tech Bloc, praised Straughan's contributions, saying, “His visionary leadership … has fueled the success stories of Codeup graduates and positioned San Antonio as a prominent player in tech workforce development,” highlighting the impact Straughan had on San Antonio's burgeoning tech scene.
