In a striking display of talent and creativity, Madeleine ‘Madz’ Patten, a Comal Independent School District (ISD) student, snagged a hefty $10,000 scholarship after coming out on top in the sculpture category of the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo Western Art Contest. Hill Country College Preparatory High School's own Patten channeled her artistic prowess over the Thanksgiving break to craft a bucking horse out of metal scraps, aptly titled "Ironclad Hooves," setting a high bar for contestants and claiming the Champion in Sculpture award.

According to KSAT, Patten was taken aback by her win, stating, "I was shocked to win this scholarship." She added, "It means a lot to be recognized for my efforts, especially when it’s something that can help me reach my goals for my future." The junior, Patten, plans to ingeniously parlay her artistic skills into a future career in mechanical or aerospace engineering, proving that creative flairs can indeed merge seamlessly with technical ambitions.

As per reports obtained by KSAT, the young sculptor sourced material from her father's bodywork shop to piece together her acclaimed sculpture. Meticulously welding discarded car parts, Patten assembled a 3D representation of a horse that exemplifies not just art but a narrative of resourceful ingenuity.

"It never fails to make me forget all my problems or troubling thoughts I could have and forces me to solely pay attention to the thing I’m creating at that moment," Patten told Comal ISD. This sentiment underscores the meditative quality art provides for her, an escape that clearly transcends beyond just a pastime into a potential academic and professional pathway.

The competition, open to high school students across 183 districts and 54 counties, saw Comal ISD students shine, with two additional first-place winners and numerous others placing second and third in their respective categories. Patten isn't only a champion but stands amongst peers who, collectively, have showcased formidable talent and brought accolades to their schools.
