The Big Haynes Creek Nature Center at Georgia International Horse Park unveiled a fresh way for visitors to engage with local wildlife ecology. Through the installation of three interactive educational signs, as Conyers city officials confirmed. These colorful informational panels, which feature rotating sections to keep the learning dynamic, have been strategically placed along the Purple Trail to both educate and entertain guests of all ages.
Designed by local outfit Sign Solutions, LLC, the signs offer insights into the plant and animal life that thrives in this 173-acre wetland habitat—they're a dive into the busy lives of creatures from kingfishers to otters and the plants they call home. While highlighting the crucial role wetlands play in community support, visitors are treated to prime spots for observing these species in their natural environment. Dawn Tanner, GIHP event manager, shared with the Georgia International Horse Park news page, “Big Haynes Creek Nature Center is committed to serving our community by providing outdoor learning opportunities that can benefit all of our guests,” acknowledging the growing trend of homeschool groups and eco-clubs seeking to turn nature into a classroom.
The newly installed fixtures signal just the beginning of a more comprehensive plan set to evolve the educational adventures at Big Haynes Creek. Looking ahead, several other rotating signs and plant identification markers are on the docket, along with an audio option for self-guided tours to make nature's lessons accessible to everyone.
In a conversation documented by the city of Conyers' official website, Tanner expressed excitement about the future, stating, “We look forward to continuing these efforts and more to enhance outdoor outreach in 2024,” emphasizing the civic duty felt by GIHP to develop future environmental stewards. With an increase in homeschooled children and organization-led outdoor classes, it's clear the city of Conyers is putting a stake in the ground to support the next generation of environmental consciousness through immersive and practical learning experiences that meld fun with the fundamentals of ecology.
