A wave of crime, including aggravated assaults, armed robberies, and a slew of thefts from vehicles, has swept through West Hollywood and has residents on edge. According to a crime report published by the West Hollywood Station, the week of December 11-17, 2023, saw a series of bold criminal activities, ranging from a man getting shot while asleep in his car to high-value items being snatched from vehicles.
The troubles began on December 12th, when a man was struck by a bullet in his lower leg as he slept in his car on Olive Drive near Sunset Blvd. He awoke to a shattered window and a stark realization that he had been hit. Later that same day, two men broke into a vehicle on Hayworth Avenue off Santa Monica Blvd, making off with personal belongings, including electronics and a purse.
Violence punctured the veil of the night on December 13th when a pedestrian, incensed by a near-miss with a car on the 900 block of Havenhurst Drive, retaliated by striking the driver with a wooden stick. Then on December 14th, a man armed with a knife robbed a victim who was loading items into his car on Santa Monica Blvd, according to the crime report.
Thefts from vehicles remain an alarming trend, with luxury items like a Patek Philippe watch and a Cartier necklace taken during a particularly brazen heist from a car on Robertson Blvd on December 16th. On the same day, multiple grand theft incidents were reported, including an electric bicycle and a valued bracelet snatched from unsuspecting victims. The spate of crimes continued on December 17th with more cell phone thefts and an unforced removal of valuable items from a car trunk on Santa Monica Blvd.
The local law enforcement urges the community to remain vigilant and to secure their belongings, especially when visiting crowded areas or leaving valuables in cars. Community members are also being encouraged to report any suspicious activities immediately, in light of the recent crime spree that has left many questioning their safety in a neighborhood known for its vibrant nightlife and shopping.
