Residents of Cypress are up in arms over two separate incidents involving trash and debris, one at a burgeoning illegal dump site and the other at a city maintenance yard turned dump site for private companies. A report from KPRC 2 dives into the community's concerns about the eyesore of an illegal dumping ground located behind a strip mall on FM 529, a scourge that has prompted calls for an investigation by Harris County Pct. 1.
Garrett Fusilier, a local resident, expressed his disdain to KPRC 2, saying the area quickly filled up with trash again after a one-time cleanup effort took place. "It’s just a real big eye sore for our community," Fusilier said, lamenting the dangerous conditions, including the risk posed to children who play in the area. Precinct 1's Environmental Crimes Unit promises to begin an investigation into the matter.
KTLA reports, according to resident Timothy Yerian, that the area that had been purposed for municipal equipment has, without transparency or consent from the neighborhood, transformed into a locus for waste, much to the ire of nearby homeowners.
Neighbors, including Yerian, have attempted to address the city on this. "It’s pretty frustrating that you make comments at the council meeting, you make suggestions, and it just falls on deaf ears," Yerian told KTLA. Councilmember Dr. Frances Marquez sympathizes with citizens' concerns, contrary to the mayor's stance that the activity is allowed under the current zoning.
