The Dallas community reels from a vicious act of gun violence that resulted in the death of a local store clerk, following the arrest of his alleged murderer in Tennessee. Dallas Police have confirmed that Kemone Rudd, 25, stands charged with the fatal shooting of Michael Pierson, 31, during an altercation at a Southeast Dallas Dollar General last Thursday. The US Marshals apprehended Rudd more than 500 miles away from the scene in Ripley, Tennessee, on Monday, as reported by FOX 4 News.
Rudd is currently being held at the Lauderdale County Jail as he awaits extradition. The tragic incident unfolded at approximately 5:40 PM on December 14, at the store located on S. Belt Line Road. Dallas Police stated that there was an argument that led to the shooting. Despite a swift response, Pierson succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to a nearby hospital. In a heart-wrenching interview, Michael Pierson's brother Mitchell said, "You have a person at work doing what they're supposed to be doing, trying to build a life for themselves and somebody shoots them for no reason", per FOX 4 News.
An immediate homicide investigation was launched, and the following day, a warrant for Rudd's arrest was issued. Pursuing the lead that Rudd might have connections to West Tennessee, Dallas Police enlisted the help of the U.S. Marshals North Texas Fugitive Task Force. Law enforcement in Shelby and Lauderdale counties were then contacted to join the manhunt for Rudd, who was successfully located and arrested two days after investigators received the tip, according to NBC DFW.
The community has grappled with the senseless loss, with Pierson's family voicing their devastation. Pierson, the oldest of three brothers and a father to a 10-year-old son, was remembered for his unwavering positivity. His mother, Shronda Pierson, in an anguished tone, said, "My kids don't know what it feels like to not have a dad, but my grandson will feel that way, and it wasn't supposed to be like that." Mourning balloons now dance in the wind outside the closed store, marking the site of a tragedy that has forever altered the Pierson family's lives, as per FOX 4 News.
