Fire and smoke are expected to rise over Denton as the Denton Fire Department and University of North Texas team up to torch a prairie—for a good cause. A prescribed burn of the pollinative prairie at UNT's Discovery Park is set to take place between Jan. 3 and Jan. 31, 2024, depending on the weather's cooperation, according to the City of Denton, Texas.

The controlled burn is a training exercise and an ecological booster shot for the 12-acre site at 3940 N. Elm, which will be covered in smoke for about four hours as Denton Wildland Firefighters get a live-action tutorial on handling blazes within city limits. Despite being conducted by Denton Wildland Firefighters, this operation aims to fertilize the field, allowing dead thatch to enrich the soil and pave the way for new growth.

Not only a spectacle, but the burn also serves real scientific purposes. UNT professors and their students will witness firsthand the refreshment of their natural research lab where grasses, flowers, and insects are regularly studied for their pollinative patterns. Clearing out the old to bring in the new, the burn is expected to give previously dormant seeds a shot at life.

The key to pulling off this fiery feat is a dance with the elements. Officials will wait for the thumbs up from the National Weather Service when the wind and humidity are just right. The winds during the burn, specifically, need to blow south to east to avoid smoking out the neighboring homes. It’s not just a matter of preference but one of public health and safety – smoke inhalation can be serious, and the burn is strategically planned to minimize risk before the UNT students return for classes.
