A TikTok food critic, Keith Lee, has recently sparked a surge in business for two local Houston eateries with his viral reviews. Known for his generous tipping habit, the star left a whopping $1,000 tip at Taste Kitchen + Bar, buoying server Leslie Haynes during a busy holiday season. Lee's visit not only meant a financial windfall for Haynes but also potentially significant exposure for the downtown restaurant, as reported by the Houston Chronicle.
Hospitality workers are feeling the 'Keith Lee effect' firsthand, with Haynes being the latest recipient. The server, who is also a single father, expressed his gratitude, remarking, "If you provide proper service, it comes back to you," as he told the Houston Chronicle. With Lee's gift, Haynes plans to start an LLC that could eventually help support his children's future endeavors.
Meanwhile, The Puddery in Pearland has reopened after having to temporarily shut down, overwhelmed by new business following Lee’s glowing review. Janel Prator, the owner, sported the newfound pride of her shop, with staff donning "Keith Lee approved" shirts as fans of Lee's reviews flooded in. "I'm feeling grateful, I'm feeling happy, I'm also feeling tired, but I am grateful," Prator said in an interview obtained by Click2Houston. The sudden popularity spike necessitated adjustments, including streamlining the menu to manage the demand.
Despite being recognized for her offerings like the highly sought-after banana pudding—which sold out rapidly after Lee's review—Prator has had to consider altering business days to keep up with demand and allow her team to rest and restock. She disclosed to Click2Houston that, moving forward, the business may close on Mondays and Tuesdays to better recover from the weekend rush and to also accommodate hiring new staff due to the increase in business.
