A 42-year-old man is facing a felony charge after police say his unsafe lane change on Loop 610 North caused a crash that killed a 47-year-old motorcyclist earlier this month. Brandon Lanone Ivory was booked into the Harris County Jail following the Oct. 9 crash near 1000 North Loop East, and he remained at the scene afterward, showing signs of impairment, according to investigators.
The crash happened around 1:35 p.m. that Friday on the North Loop East corridor of Interstate 610, according to City of Houston News. Houston Police Department investigators say a white Ford Econoline van was traveling southbound when its driver made an unsafe lane change and struck a yellow Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The impact threw the motorcycle's operator from the bike, and he then struck the freeway's concrete barrier.
Houston Fire Department paramedics rushed the motorcyclist to an area hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. His identity is still pending notification to family members by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences, the outlet's report notes. Ivory, meanwhile, was uninjured in the crash.
Charges Filed in the 180th Criminal District Court
Investigators with HPD's Vehicular Crimes Division, whose account was relayed by Sergeant J. Wu and Officer R. Leibold, say Ivory exhibited signs of impairment at the scene. The Harris County District Attorney's Office was contacted, and charges of intoxication assault were subsequently filed against him. The case has been assigned to the 180th Criminal District Court. A Jones Injury Law Group biography describes DaSean Jones as a former Harris County judge who stepped away from the bench.
Under Texas Penal Code Section 49.07, intoxication assault causing serious bodily injury is a third-degree felony, punishable by two to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000, per Blass Law. The statute applies when impaired driving causes serious bodily harm that creates a substantial risk of death or permanent impairment. Intoxication manslaughter under Texas Penal Code Section 49.08 is a second-degree felony carrying two to 20 years in prison and a maximum $10,000 fine, according to Angel Reyes & Associates.
Loop 610 and Houston's Motorcycle Safety Gap
The crash adds to a troubling pattern on Houston's roadways. While motorcycles make up less than 2% of registered vehicles in the city, they account for roughly 14% of all local traffic fatalities, according to crash data compiled by WestLoop Law, which estimates that Houston motorcyclists are 35 times more likely to suffer fatal injuries than occupants of passenger vehicles. Statewide, Texas recorded 557 motorcyclist fatalities in 2025, and Harris County leads Texas counties in motorcycle crashes.
Drivers may miss motorcyclists or misjudge their speeds.
The crash has been logged under incident number 127960726-R. No further details on Ivory's custody status or an arraignment date were available.
