A motorist's afternoon drive turned into a frightening encounter when an individual allegedly brandished a firearm at them on I-880, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The victim, who was driving southbound on the Thornton Avenue off-ramp in Hayward, claimed to have observed the suspect stashing the gun in a blue bag before making their getaway.
Alerted to the potential threat, three officers from CHP Hayward descended upon the area to confront a perilous situation. Sergeant Tirre, Officer Mangalathil, and Officer Valencia found the suspect armed not with a live firearm but with a black AR-style 4.5mm pellet gun just west of I-880 on Thornton Avenue.
The authorities apprehended the suspect without incident, who was later taken into custody on charges of weapon brandishing and a probation violation. The swift response of the officers possibly averted a more serious confrontation.
In the wake of the incident, CHP Hayward issued a public advisory stressing the gravity with which they treat all reports of weapon brandishing. "When our officers respond to calls like this, we take every precaution to ensure public and we take all reports of brandishing very seriously," a statement released on their Facebook page said. CHP strongly encouraged the public to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious activities involving firearms to 911.
