Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has expanded his entrepreneurial reach into everyday convenience with the opening of The Boring Bodega in Bastrop, a sprawling snack-filled warehouse now operational as part of his envisioned town. Alongside the typical offerings, this bodega boasts a children's playground, a lounge area with video games, and a rentable pickleball court, looking to upgrade the convenience store experience for locals and visitors alike.
With doors open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and extended hours over the weekend as reported by KVUE, the Boring Bodega is nestled comfortably in Hyperloop Plaza, adjacent to Musk's other ventures. Further plans to add a bar and outdoor stage are in the works, signaling an earnest push into the retail sector which may, in true Musk fashion, ripple out to compete with local giants like H-E-B.
Despite the controversy and environmental concerns surrounding Musk's business operations, Bastrop resident Chap Ambrose, who has previously campaigned against The Boring Company with his “Keep Bastrop Boring” billboard, expressed a change of heart. "Criticism goes both ways, and my hat is off to Boring Co for creating this incredible community space," Ambrose commented in an X post noted by MySA. Yet, not all community members echo this sentiment, with some Bastrop real estate agents showcasing through social media, where the locals voiced their dissent.
While many have taken to Instagram and Reddit to levy criticism at Musk's latest foray, with one Instagram user citing the company's wastewater practices and another Reddit user quipping, "It’s the Cybertruck of convenience stores," a handful of Bastrop residents have extended their welcome. One such resident, echoing in approval through social media, heralded the Boring Bodega as, "Such an inviting and cozy space to sit around with fellow free thinkers," in a statement highlighted by MySA. The Bodega also features a small cafe that serves a range of beverages and health-conscious snacks, in what appears to be a mix of new-age retail and community hub.
The Boring Bodega's emergence is a clear indicator of Musk's continuing interest in reshaping the landscape of Bastrop, a town already feeling the influence of his high-tech industrial ambitions. Amidst the playful amenities and artisan snacks, a conversation unravels about the nature of corporate ventures and their place within the fabric of small-town America, with the Boring Bodega serving as the latest canvas for this ever-evolving discourse.
