The long shadow of a 2019 shooting has finally reached the courtroom, more than four years after former Farmers Branch police officer Michael Dunn was accused of murdering Juan Moreno during a botched sting operation. Dunn, who had been part of the force for nearly 13 years, now faces a trial for his actions that led to the fatal shooting, according to FOX 4 News.
Moreno met his untimely end when Dunn discharged his firearm several times as the victim drove a stolen pickup truck, which, Dunn claimed, posed a lethal threat to him. Nonetheless, security footage suggests otherwise: Dunn was not in danger as the truck moved away from his position. The repercussions extend beyond Dunn's trial as Moreno's family embarks on a legal confrontation with the city of Farmers Branch, alleging insufficient officer training, as reported by FOX 4 News.
At the heart of the trial, which got underway this week, is a critical decision by Dunn to opt for a bench trial, foregoing a jury in favor of a verdict from Judge Michael Snipes. Monday's proceedings saw fellow officers testify, recounting the ill-fated operation that led to the violent encounter near Moreno’s residence, where they had tracked a truck allegedly lifted by Moreno, a known figure in local vehicle theft circles, as detailed by WFAA.
Surveillance video, paired with police radio traffic, showed a rapid escalation as Moreno, donning a red shirt with two acquaintances, approaches and enters a white pickup truck. Upon Dunn's quick arrival and the truck's hastened departure, a mere nine seconds elapsed before gunfire erupted, ending with a deadly bullet striking Moreno. Prosecutors highlight the potential danger to bystanders due to Dunn's hasty use of lethal force; however, Dunn's defense insists that Dunn had no luxury of time and was faced with an immediate threat to his life.
Testimony from Dr. Tracy Dyer, the then-medical examiner, confirmed Moreno's impaired state with a significant level of methamphetamine in his bloodstream at the time of death. Dr. Dyer stated that Moreno succumbed to a gunshot wound to the head, sustaining additional injuries from two more bullets, according to WFAA.
