A tragic roadway incident left one dead on Byron Highway in Contra Costa County, California. According to a post by the California Highway Patrol - Contra Costa, a four-vehicle accident occurred yesterday, at around 6:25 p.m. south of Clifton Court Road, leading to multiple injuries and one fatality.
The collision was initiated when a white Chevrolet Silverado, moving at an unknown speed, veered into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a grey Kia sedan. Following the collision, the Kia was thrust off the road, coming to a halt on the right shoulder, while the Silverado stopped blocking both highway lanes. The driver of the Kia was pronounced dead at the scene.
The occupants of the Chevrolet were grievously injured, necessitating an airlift for the driver and an ambulance transport for the passenger to John Muir Walnut Creek Hospital. The aftermath of the crash saw a Hyundai Elantra and a Hummer also sustaining minor damage from debris, though none of their occupants were injured.
During their investigation, the CHP noted that the lone driver of the Kia was not wearing their seatbelt properly. However, impairment due to alcohol or drugs was ruled out as a contributing factor to this fatal event. The crash is still under investigation by authorities, who are actively seeking any witnesses to provide further insight into the deadly incident.
