A sting operation at Camarillo Premium Outlets led to four individuals arrested for organized retail theft, with over $1,700 in merchandise recovered. The collaborative effort between local law enforcement and retailers took place on December 19 and spanned eight hours, according to a news release by the Camarillo Police Department.
Amidst the throng of holiday shoppers, two separate incidents emerged. One involved three suspects coordinating a theft with a getaway vehicle at the ready, while another used burglary tools to sidestep security measures. Detective Robert Medina from the Camarillo Police Department stated, "The operation resulted in four arrests and returned $1,781.48 in merchandise back to six retailers located at the Camarillo Outlets."
Those nabbed face several charges ranging from grand theft of property over $950 to conspiracy to commit a crime, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, possession of burglary tools, and shoplifting. The suspects hail from Oxnard and Inglewood and range in age from 17 to 25. Organized retail theft has presented a significant challenge to the area, with authorities citing an increase in such crimes over the past two years, including distraction thefts, pickpockets, and identity theft.
The Camarillo Outlets, a hub of commerce, has seen a sharp increase in thefts, particularly during peak shopping seasons when visitor footfall skyrockets. These criminal acts not only lead to significant revenue loss for stores but also impact the city’s coffers and can deter the shopping experience for consumers. Local police have been proactive, fostering partnerships with retailers to maintain a safe environment and launching high visibility operations to curb retail crimes. Moreover, Sergeant J. Stubblefield approved the release of a booking photo related to the crime.
The police are advocating for shoppers to remain vigilant, especially during the holidays, advising that personal belongings should not be left unattended. The department also expressed gratitude to the community whose efforts in reporting suspicious behaviors aid in preserving safety. Tips that lead to arrests in such cases may yield rewards up to $1,000, as per Ventura County Crime Stoppers, with anonymity guaranteed to those who provide information.
