Near the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) student housing zone, an incident unfolded resembling a tense Western shootout, leaving students and parents shaken. A mother's outcry has amplified the growing safety concerns at The Reserve apartment complex, following an unsettling incident where gunfire erupted during a raucous party in October.
"What I saw was a wild, wild west. These kids are in a war zone; they should not be subjected to any kind of activity of the sort," DeYanna Brazile, a distressed mother, bared her fears to Fox San Antonio. This reaction followed her viewing of a video showing several people indiscriminately opening fire at the aforementioned gathering. The video in question reportedly captured at least 15 shots fired in a haunting 8-second span, fortunately not resulting in any personal injuries but damaging walls, doors, and even a vehicle.
“My child is traumatized by this. Living here is not even an option anymore. To be honest with you, she’s actually going to do some homeschooling as a result of all that’s going on,” Brazile explained in an interview.
Although the property's Houston-based managing company, Asset Living, has not dived into specifics regarding the incidents when reached by KENS 5, a statement assured that "We’re aware of the recent unfortunate events that have taken place on our property. Our main concern is the well-being of our residents, and while we cannot discuss details related to specific current or former residents’ occupancy status, what we can say is that these incidents are being investigated by SAPD, the offending resident has been evicted, and security patrols have been increased at the property," Asset Senior Regional Supervisor Whitney Owen said via email.
The San Antonio Police Department is increasingly visible in the vicinity, responding to over 500 service calls within a half-mile radius of UTSA since the commencement of the fall semester. Crime statistics are dominated by incidents of car thefts, property thefts, and assaults, offering a stark backdrop to the personal accounts shared by students.
Both the student and Brazile mentioned that legal documents containing personal information were stolen during the burglary. The S.A.P.D. is currently investigating the incident, and all four roommates have vacated the apartment, as mentioned by Fox San Antonio.
