The chaos unfolded at the Fort Worth Community Credit Union on the afternoon of November 27 when Leland Williams, 35, allegedly walked in intending to rob the establishment. Sporting a fake name at the check-in kiosk, Williams' erratic behavior escalated as he brandished a weapon and shot Tarrant County Sheriff’s Deputy Brent Brown. Brown, in an off-duty capacity but uniformed, returned fire despite being struck twice.
Responding officers arrived within a minute, quickly securing the scene and seeking out eyewitnesses who pointed them in the direction Williams fled. Their swift action preceded an even more urgent response from residents in a nearby neighborhood. Tips from the community led the authorities to the 1800 block of Lynnwood Hills Drive, where Williams was suspected to have run into a house.
The standoff was brief, ending with Williams' capture by the Fort Worth SWAT team without further bloodshed. Following the incident, he was booked into the Tarrant County Jail on a $1 million bond, facing charges of Criminal Attempt – Capital Murder of a Peace Officer. Meanwhile, Deputy Brown, a member of the TCSO's warrant division since 2011, is on the mend after sustaining injuries to the upper body and lower abdomen.
Fort Worth Police Department has since released video evidence from body cameras and surveillance footage to shed light on the critical incident. Interested parties can view the footage online to gain insight into the harrowing ordeal that unfolded that Monday afternoon.
