A Level 3 sex offender, Darren Joseph Sayers, is slated for release into the Cass Lake community. According to the Bemidji Pioneer, the 55-year-old who served his sentence imposed by the court for aiding accomplices in the sexual assault of a known woman will be residing at the 300 block of Spruce Avenue starting January 2. Sayers and his accomplices utilized force and took advantage of the victim's incapacitated state at a private residence after meeting her in a bar.

At 5-foot-10 with black hair and brown eyes, and recognized as an American Indian or Alaskan Native, Sayers' presence is a concern for many because of the risk he represents. The Cass County Sheriff's Office stated to not stoke fear but to promote public safety awareness. The Sheriff's Office cannot dictate where Sayers lives, works, or learns now that he has completed his sentence. This disclosure aims to inform the public, for "an informed public is a safer public," as obtained by Bemidji Pioneer.

Level 3 offenders are deemed by the justice system to have a high probability of re-offending, which brands Sayers among the most dangerous to re-enter society. The Cass County Sheriff's Office categorizes sex offenders into three risk groups, with Level 3 carrying the highest risk of recidivism.

The Sheriff's Office encourages vigilance and reminds citizens to report any suspicious activities by dialing 911. They further clarified that Sayers "is not wanted by the authorities, as he has served his sentence," as reported by Brainerd Dispatch
