A road rage incident spun out of control yesterday on Highway 59 near downtown, resulting in a high-speed chase, two struck vehicles, and a foot pursuit before law enforcement could bring the chaos to an end. Harris County Sheriff's Office Deputy Shafi, amidst his duties, was alerted to a road rage event that turned potentially deadly. Shafi engaged in chase when the alleged aggressor, identified as Ariel Reynosa Flores, born on July 11, 1999, refused to heed instructions and stop his vehicle, according to a Facebook post by the Sheriff's Office.
The pursuit ended near N. Macgregor and Almeda after Flores's vehicle collided with two others, imparting minor damage but leaving the drivers unharmed. The suspect then took flight on foot. With the aid of Sgt. Perkins, Flores was apprehended shortly thereafter. Flores had an open parole violation warrant for a previous charge as a felon in possession of a weapon and will now also face charges of Aggravated Assault and Evading.
In the road rage incident, Flores is accused of a particularly brazen act of aggression: brandishing a firearm and discharging two rounds at another motorist. The shots struck the victim's vehicle on the front driver's side door, fortunately not wounding anyone inside. Deputy Shafi and Sgt. Perkins’s swift action was credited with the resolution of the incident, ensuring no physical harm came to those targeted in this frightening moment of fury on the roadway.
"Great work by Deputy Shafi and Sgt Perkins," Sheriff Ed Gonzalez touted on social media, recognizing the officers' efforts to quell a violent altercation that could've resulted in much more dire consequences.
