In an unexpected turn that could've spelled disaster for highway commuters, a small twin-engine Piper Aztec was forced to perform an emergency landing on Highway 80, Forney, a town just outside of Dallas, Texas. The busy roadway saw the impromptu arrival of the aircraft around 2:45 p.m. on Monday, narrowly avoiding tragedy as no one was seriously injured in the emergency maneuver, according to Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

The plane, which is registered to Pacific Fleet Aviation LLC, based in Rochester, New York, left Mesquite Metro Airport at approximately 9:30 a.m. and was headed back to the airport when the pilot had to land in the highway's median. "I genuinely was shocked: said Kali Huckeba, a local who witnessed the event. "I could not believe that something would happen like that on this busy of a highway", as per FOX 4 News.

Authorities were quick to respond to the situation, shutting down both eastbound and westbound traffic on U.S. Highway 80 at FM 740 and funneling cars to the service road. Significant delays were expected as a result. The Forney Police Department advised motorists on its social media to avoid the area. A TxDOT traffic camera image showed the aircraft resting on the grass median, mere feet from the lanes of traffic.

Local John Hicks, recounted his astonishment at the flawless emergency landing amidst the highway's usual flow of vehicles, "He actually landed at a time when it was a lot, of cars. It’s very busy. He was very lucky," Hicks said. The Federal Aviation Administration has initiated an investigation into the cause of the emergency landing, with a preliminary report expected to be published on Tuesday. Hours after the incident, the damaged plane was hoisted onto a flatbed truck and carted away, according to FOX 4 News.

Despite the potential for catastrophe, residents expressed relief that the event did not result in more severe outcomes. "Nine times out of 10, you’re sitting in traffic in Forney," Hicks reflected, hinting at the disastrous possibilities had traffic conditions been different, per FOX 4 News.
