In an early morning intervention, a Hingham police drone was key in locating a Quincy man accused of driving under the influence and fleeing a crash site. The event unfolded near Lincoln Street, Hingham, where the individual struck a tree with his SUV and then ran from the scene, according to Hingham police.

The 23-year-old, who has yet to be named, will face multiple charges including driving under the influence, leaving the scene of a crash causing property damage, and negligent driving. Officers were called to the single-vehicle incident around 4:23 a.m., stated the Boston 25 News. A witness described how the man, who was alone, fled on foot once the prospect of police involvement was mentioned.

The extent of the crash was significant, with a report from MassLive detailing the Chevy Suburban's southbound trajectory turning abrupt when it collided with a tree. The impact was intense enough to cause the vehicle to spin and parts of the axel to come loose. Officers at the scene found blood on the driver's side airbag, which spurred the use of K9 units and the launching of a department drone to locate the individual.

The drone quickly discovered the driver lying face down in a wooded area near Bremer Circle. "Officers arrived and found the man was unconscious, police said. After a short time, they were able to wake him," WCVB reported. The officers' findings, which included the strong odor of alcohol and the driver’s bloodshot eyes validated the suspicion of intoxicated driving.

Subsequent to the driver's awakening and assessment, he was transported to South Shore Hospital. He faces court summons for the slew of charges linked to this incident. His identity has been withheld as formal arrest proceedings have not taken place, and the situation remains subject to further investigation.
