
Local non-profit Hosea Helps hosted a Christmas event at the Georgia World Congress Center where hundreds of underprivileged children and families received food and gifts. As FOX 5 Atlanta reported, the feelings of community and warmth were evident, with one attendee, Tiawnee Summers, expressing, "This is like the closest thing that I have to family down here. This is like it's bringing back the feeling that I used to get back home when I was growing up, so it's very heartwarming for me,"
The city witnessed a 30% increase in homelessness in 2023 compared to the previous year. Elisabeth Omilami, CEO of Hosea Helps, told Atlanta News First that they served 51,000 people slipping into poverty this year. Services offered included hot meals, free haircuts, and toys, aiming to provide both immediate relief and a sense of dignity.
Fatima Taylor, a single mother to two boys, expressed her gratitude: "I’m just really grateful, thankful because I wasn’t able to do much for them this year."
Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens' goal is to secure 20,000 affordable housing by 2030. As Atlanta News First notes, The Melody, a complex crafted from converted shipping containers, is set to house 40 formerly homeless individuals and further development is planned for 2024. Reports indicate that rent prices may be steadying, with a 6% drop observed recently.
