In a dramatic late-night rescue that seems ripped from the plot of an action movie, Chula Vista Police officers saved a man from a fiery death after his vehicle burst into flames on Interstate 5. According to the Chula Vista Police Department yesterday, the incident occurred on October 13, shortly after 11:00 p.m., when several emergency calls reported a vehicle fire.
Initial calls to 9-1-1 were overheard by a Chula Vista Police sergeant who sensed the urgency and directed officers to respond "CODE 3." Despite the confusion over the precise location of the burning vehicle, a police drone dispatched as part of the Drone as First Responder program provided the critical details needed for officers to reach the scene promptly.
Upon arrival, officers found the desperate man trapped inside the inferno, his life hanging in the balance. Amid the raging flames and the risk to their safety, officers smashed through a rear window and pulled the man out just seconds before the car was fully engulfed. Their quick action and the advantage provided by cutting-edge technology contributed markedly to the successful rescue effort.
The victim, speaking after awakening from a coma four weeks later, expressed profound gratitude for the officers' lifesaving actions. "I feel like a got a second chance. I’m so appreciative that they were able to get there in time and do what they did. If they didn’t, I wouldn’t be here today," he told the Chula Vista Police Department.
Chula Vista Police Chief Roxana Kennedy has since heralded her officers' courage and quick thinking. "I want people to see how police officers put their own lives at risk every single day to save people they don’t even know. I’m grateful this man survived and so proud of my officers for what they did to rescue him," she stated in the press release. The department has made the harrowing rescue footage public on its YouTube page, further highlighting the operation's critical moments captured by body-worn cameras and the overhead drone.
