Houston Heats Up as Cop Clings to Life and Perp Goes Down in Dead-of-Night Shootout

A Houston police sergeant was shot multiple times early this morning in an incident that culminated in a deadly exchange of gunfire, leaving a suspect dead. The incident occurred around 1:15 a.m. in the 7000 block of Harwin Drive, as confirmed by the Houston Police Department (HPD) in the City of Houston news release.

Sergeant M. Valle, 38, experienced gunfire at the hands of an armed suspect during a crime suppression team investigation. According to the City of Houston's official news release, the officer, assigned to the Midwest Patrol Division, was immediately transported to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center and is presently in stable condition.

The suspect, a 23-year-old whose identity has yet to be released pending examination by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences, was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering gunshot wounds. HPD patrol officers originally lost sight of him but later discovered the wounded man around a corner from where the shootout occurred.

Details were provided by HPD Special Investigations Unit Sergeant E. Wohlgemuth and Detectives D. Escobar, C. Walker, and N. Barnes stated that Sergeant Valle was shot as he searched behind a building. Despite his injuries, Valle managed to return fire, hitting the suspect. Following the confrontation, officers and paramedics administered first aid to both the suspect and the sergeant before the suspect's death was confirmed and Valle was taken to the hospital.

The HPD has initiated a comprehensive investigation into the incident, with inquiries being conducted by the HPD Special Investigations Unit, the Internal Affairs Division, and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
