Houston saw a touch of winter cheer this week as Governor Greg Abbott toasted the latest push to beef up the Texas power grid. On Thursday, Abbott marked the start of expansion at Calpine Corporation's Freestone County Energy Center, a move likely to create over 300 new jobs and add 425 megawatts of dispatchable power. That's just a taste of what's to come, with an anticipated 7,000 megawatts ready to roll out in 2024. "The bottom line is Texans need more electrical power," Abbott stressed, as stated on the Office of Texas Governor official website.
During his meeting in Houston, Abbott didn't shy away from boldly championing Texas' tight-knit liaisons with corporations in the energy sector, ensuring they bring to pass more reliable, dispatchable power for Texans far and wide. He also spotlighted steps taken by the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUC), Railroad Commission of Texas, and Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), from enforcing the nation's toughest weatherization mandates to deploying additional inspectors to guarantee these mandates are met.
Apart from these efforts, the state has taken to mapping critical infrastructure, enhancing resource collaboration between state assets, and encouraging on-site backup fuel supplies for dispatchable power. As winter bears down, Texans can feel a tad more secure knowing these procedures are in place.
