Houston Officer Fires on Robbery Suspect During Confrontation in Fifth Ward

A Houston police officer discharged his firearm, striking a robbery suspect in the back during an altercation in the Fifth Ward area, law enforcement officials confirmed. The incident unfolded after an officer responded to a theft at a Family Dollar store, located on the 3300 block of Liberty Road, around 2:30 p.m. yesterday. Police indicated that a man, suspected of stealing beer and assaulting a store clerk who attempted to halt his escape, was later engaged by the police, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Following the theft, an eyewitness saw the suspect fleeing from the officer, a confrontation that escalated in a nearby field. "The officer was in fear for his life ..., discharged at least one time, striking the suspect," Executive Assistant Chief Ban Tien described the situation, according to KHOU. The pursuit ended when the suspect allegedly attempted to disarm the officer, prompting the shooting. The officer involved is a two-year veteran of the Houston Police Department and sustained minor injuries during the incident.

The suspect, who authorities revealed has a history of criminal activity and an open felony theft warrant, was in stable condition after surgery at Ben Taub Hospital. Meanwhile, no weapon was found on the suspect at the scene of the struggle. As is standard protocol in such incidents, the Houston Police Department's internal affairs division and homicide investigator from the special investigations unit are conducting concurrent investigations, while the district attorney's office will also run a parallel probe. Bodycam footage from the event will be released within 30 days, Executive Assistant Chief Tien told the Houston Chronicle.

Officials are currently seeking witness statements and video evidence related to the incident. None of the witnesses who were present during the altercation and subsequent shooting have yet provided a formal statement.
