Houston is heating up with more than just its temperature as CenterPoint Energy makes a million-dollar move in honor of Mayor Sylvester Turner. The energy giant is shelling out a cool $1 million to help low-income Houstonians keep their lights on and homes warm, a contribution bestowed in the name of outgoing Mayor Turner, a champion for the city's disadvantaged neighborhoods. Yesterday, the funds were earmarked for energy bill assistance and will be managed by the Gulf Coast Community Services Association (GCCSA), according to a press release by Administration & Regulatory Affairs.
"Given Mayor Turner’s selfless commitment and outstanding service to our city for the past eight years, this felt like a fitting way to celebrate him and build upon his legacy of helping others across our communities," said CenterPoint Energy CEO Dave Lesar, overlooking the fact that the Mayor has also been a longstanding ally to energy sector alliances. GCCSA, on the receiving end of this generous donation, will be the chief architect behind vetting applicants and pumping out the funds.
GCCSA's own head honcho, Dr. Jonita Reynolds, was quoted saying in the article, "We are beyond grateful to have the opportunity for GCCSA...to help eradicate poverty and provide stability to households struggling to make ends meet."
