A Houston woman charged with the capital murder of a teenage mother is ordered to stay in jail, awaiting her next court appearance scheduled for the end of December. Kaysone Sky Blossom, 37, is accused of brutally ending the life of 17-year-old Kayla Nicole Stevenson, who was en route to her job at the Galleria Mall on December 9, according to KHOU.
Blossom, on a bond from a prior aggravated assault charge involving the stabbing of her ex-boyfriend in 2021, allegedly stabbed Stevenson for her purse, which contained her phone, keys, and a bank card. Her bond was revoked due to the nature of this violent crime, with the purse of the victim used after her death. Blossom was arrested at her home on Beechnut Street, as police say they found Kayla's ID there, as reported by ABC13.
Prosecutors in the case have expressed shock at the randomness and brutality of the act, arguing for the continued detention of Blossom. "I think it's always shocking when someone is killed, but it's especially shocking when someone is killed for no apparent reason," prosecutor Chris Condon stated in an interview obtained by KHOU. Meanwhile, according to ABC13, Blossom’s defense awaits a mental health evaluation's results.
Kayla Nicole Stevenson, who would have celebrated her 18th birthday in February, leaves behind a 6-month-old daughter. "She was a fun loving, free spirit, ya know. She was goofy, she always made me laugh; she was really happy," Kayla's mother, Kylie Stevenson, told KHOU. The devastated mother couldn’t fathom her daughter's loss over something as trivial as a purse. To help with expenses related to the tragedy, the family has set up a GoFundMe account.
The next steps for the legal proceedings include a bond hearing for Blossom set for Dec. 27, followed potentially by a grand jury indictment, as the case continues to develop under heightened scrutiny due to Blossom's criminal history and the circumstances surrounding her being out on bond during the time of the stabbing. "Our hearts go out to Ms. Stevenson's family. Can't imagine what they're going through, especially with the holidays right now," Condon told KHOU.
