Huntington Beach is bracing itself for a significant surf event as a large, mid to long-period WNW swell is set to hit the coastline, particularly along Goldenwest Street/Seapoint Avenue and Bolsa Chica State Beach. According to the City of Huntington Beach, which posted an advisory on its Facebook page, this swell event is a blend of two separate swells expected to deliver towering waves to the area.
The initial swell peaked on the 28th, with waves reaching heights between 10-15 feet, and another surge is anticipated to maintain surf heights around 8-10 feet through Friday the 29th. The following swell, predicted to commence on the 30th, could cause even more dramatic conditions with projections indicating waves could rise to the formidable 15-18 foot range on Saturday before scaling down on Sunday.
Alongside the thrill for surf enthusiasts, local officials have voiced concerns over potential hazards accompanying the high surf and morning high tides; these could instigate coastal flooding, including water breaching the Pacific Coast Highway near Bolsa Chica wetlands and affecting Sunset Beach. As such, Marine Safety and Public Works departments are actively collaborating to mitigate the risks posed by the exceptional swell with safety precautions and preparatory measures.
