John Ackerman is set to take up the mantle as the new chief of Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) after receiving accolades from Mayor Karen Bass and a nod from the Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners. This leadership change occurs as LAWA embarks on a multi-billion-dollar improvement journey, a critical factor in maintaining its reputation as a top global airport hub. Ackerman's appointment will soon go before the Los Angeles City Council for confirmation.
With a career decked with aviation credits, Ackerman's experience is expected to significantly contribute to LAWA's commitment to enhancing the airport experience. "He is ready to lead the department as it continues to undergo billions in capital improvement programs, work effectively with airport partners and community members, and push the envelope on equity and sustainability," Mayor Bass was quoted saying, as per a statement. His former stints include establishing a pioneering cargo strategy at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport and enhancing the customer experience at Denver International Airport.
During the search process, the Board of Airport Commissioners cast a wide net, aiming internationally to rope in the most qualified aviation leaders. "The Board of Airport Commissioners conducted a comprehensive international search to recruit the most qualified leaders for the CEO role," stated Board President Karim Webb. Webb is looking forward to partnering with Ackerman to advance the airport’s capital programs, enrich passenger experiences, and hit targets in the workforce and equity objectives.
John Ackerman himself expressed gratitude for his latest career milestone. “I am so honored to accept this appointment to serve as the next CEO of Los Angeles World Airports,” Ackerman remarked. He also emphasized his readiness to leverage skills honed over his career to spearhead LAWA and serve the City of Los Angeles. The trained pilot's past roles in critical airport operations and strategy suggest a breadth of expertise that could inform and flow seamlessly into his new role at the helm of LAWA.
