John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana, known for its firm stance on aviation noise, has just given a nod to the good guys of the skies. In its latest move to keep the peace, the airport's 2022 Fly Friendly program is spotlighting General Aviation jet operators who have gone the extra mile to hush their engines and green their flight plans.
"I want to thank the stakeholders, community members, and Airport staff who have committed to being good neighbors and supported our efforts to build a program responsive to the needs of the community," said Supervisor Katrina Foley, advocates for quieter skies, according to a release from the airport. The program's recognized top dogs for last year include Mountain Aviation, NetJets Aviation, and Thrive Aviation in its highest tier.
The Fly Friendly program divides jet operators into four scoring tiers based on their annual operations, with the likes of Air Transport (ATI Jet), International Jet Aviation, and SP Aviation cutting the second tier. These are operators taking off and landing less frequently, but still getting big-time props for their light touch on the throttle. Charlene Reynolds, John Wayne Airport Director, shared in a statement, "We are thrilled to have launched this voluntary program and anticipate that pilot participation will increase over time."
Endorsed by the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA), the voluntary program launched in August 2022, stacks up operators based on eco-friendly efforts like steering clear of the night sky when they can, keeping the noise to a minimum, and schooling pilots on how to fly without ruffling feathers on the ground. Operators even chipping in for ecological projects get gold stars. The NBAA said, "We are happy to have partnered with the Airport in helping to develop this program for the benefit of the community," further solidifying the community-focused agenda of the initiative.
"It was a privilege to be part of the working group, providing community perspective and input into this initiative," expressed Sue Dvorak, Orange County Airport Commission Chair and resident, her words proudly echoed in an official statement.
