A Joshua Tree man is facing murder charges after he was arrested in connection with the fentanyl overdose death of a Yucca Valley man. A 26-year-old Nicholas Koeller is accused of the fatal supply of the drug that led to the death of Steven Lockhart, 33, a San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department press release announced.
In response to a surge in opioid-related fatalities, the Sheriff's Department initiated a pilot project in February 2021, aiming to target the alarming incline in deaths, particularly among younger demographics. These tragedies are increasingly linked to counterfeit pharmaceuticals laced with fentanyl as drug traffickers adapt their poisonous commerce to market trends. San Bernardino County has seen a spike in fatalities, correlating with national patterns, per the information shared on the Sheriff's Department website.
The Overdose Response Team (ORT), a joint effort between the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department and the District Attorney's Bureau of Investigation, took charge of the investigation. Lockhart's case began on November 2, 2022, when authorities were called to a death on Navajo Trail, Yucca Valley. The ORT, after concluding an overdose had occurred assumed responsibility for the inquiry.
Upon completing their investigation, and, receiving autopsy results, authorities zeroed in on Koeller as the perpetrator. The ORT presented their findings to the District Attorney's Office which subsequently filed murder charges. On December 21, Koeller was placed under arrest and taken to the Morongo Basin Station Jail, authorities indicated.
The Sheriff-Coroner Shannon D. Dicus prompted the community to aid the ongoing investigation. People with any knowledge of the case are encouraged to contact the Gangs/Narcotics Division, and they can opt to stay anonymous through WeTip by calling 800-78CRIME or visiting www.wetip.com. As the fight against this scourge of fentanyl continues, the loss of Steven Lockhart stands as a stark reminder of the drug's fatal reach and the relentless pursuit of justice by San Bernardino authorities.
