The Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) has released new information and a disturbing video detailing the events that led up to the fatal shooting of a stabbing suspect by police officers earlier this month. The confrontation, which resulted in the death of 38-year-old Eriberto Penaloza after he allegedly stabbed his mother, occurred on the 300 block of East 69th Way on November 8.
According to the official LBPD press release, officers responded to a stabbing call at approximately 8:57 a.m. They were met with Penaloza inside the residence, armed with a knife and acting aggressively towards officers. Despite reiterative demands to disarm, Penaloza advanced on the officers, knife raised, leading to the officer-involved shooting.
The released video is part of the LBPD's effort to provide transparency surrounding critical incidents, in line with Senate Bill 1421 and Assembly Bill 748, which require the disclosure of certain records and videos. The footage has been labeled graphic and viewer discretion is highly advised, as reported by LBPD's update.
Penaloza's mother was reportedly hiding in a room with another relative at the time of the incident; both were unharmed during the altercation. After the shooting, the Long Beach Fire Department transported Penaloza and his mother to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries. It was revealed that Penaloza had additional stab wounds to his upper body before police arrived at the scene, pointing to a prior conflict.
As part of the normal procedure, the LBPD's Homicide Detectives and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office are conducting separate investigations to provide a comprehensive review of the incident. The public has been urged to come forward with any information that could assist their ongoing investigation. Individuals with knowledge on the case are prompted to contact Detectives Sean Magee or J.C. Reyes at (562) 570-7244, or anonymously through various tip lines, as detailed in the Hoodline article.
