A Lancaster man faces murder and arson charges following the discovery of a woman's charred body in the trunk of a burned-out car at his home, local authorities have confirmed. Matthew Switalski, 37, is accused of killing 27-year-old Veronica Aguilar, a teacher and UCLA graduate, who was found with multiple stab wounds and severe burns after a blaze was extinguished at Switalski's residence on Dec. 20.
Revealed in court and reported by KABC, Switalski, while free on bond from an unrelated sexual assault case, allegedly murdered Aguilar believed to have been his girlfriend. He did not enter a plea during his first court appearance as bail was notably revoked, and his arraignment was rescheduled for January 18.
Events took dark turns on the day the body was found, as neighbors recalled hearing a 'bloodcurdling scream' from Switalski's house. Switalski was reportedly seen leaving the premises in a truck, trailing a haul of $25,000 in cash from a joint bank account with his father. Authorities later caught up with him camping at Lake Isabella in Kern County, as reported by KABC.
In the wake of the tragedy, Aguilar's grieving family has set up a GoFundMe page to raise funds for her funeral expenses. A representative of the family shared, "Things will never be the same ever again. We miss her so much," testifying to Aguilar's enduring spirit. While detained and denied bail, Switalski is held behind bars, and the investigation into the circumstances of Aguilar's death continues. Local authorities are urging anyone with information to swiftly come forward and contact the Homicide Bureau, as detailed by Hoodline.
The grisly incident has rattled the community of Quartz Hill, with many residents expressing their shock and dismay at such violence erupting in their midst. As the investigation unfolds, remaining details await discovery, raising questions about the sequence of events that led to such a harrowing outcome.
