An LAPD officer's firearm went off unintentionally in the Foothill station parking lot this past weekend, alarming one fellow officer but resulting in no injuries, the department said Monday. The incident occurred on December 17, around 7:21 p.m., when the officer was reportedly loading equipment into a police vehicle. A solitary round from the firearm struck the concrete floor, the department confirmed in a statement.
The Force Investigation Division is now looking thoroughly into the so-called Non-Tactical Unintentional Discharge (NTUD) case, as per LAPD protocols. "One round was discharged, striking the pavement floor of the parking structure," said a passage in the department's official statement. Another officer was seated in the vehicle when the gun went off, the report noted.
While the investigation continues to possibly unravel what led to the firearm going off, the LAPD is tight-lipped about further details. The standard procedure following such an incident typically includes a thorough review of the firearm itself, as well as the circumstances leading up to the discharge, to ensure nothing similar happens again. The authorities have not yet publicly named the involved officer, as the probe is ongoing.
