A refrigerator at the Topanga Community Police Station found itself on the wrong end of a gun when an LAPD sergeant inadvertently fired his weapon inside the station's vice office, authorities said. The incident occurred around 11:50 a.m. on December 5, the stray bullet was fortunately stopped by the kitchen appliance, preventing any injuries to personnel or bystanders, the department reported.
According to the LAPD news release, the non-tactical unintentional discharge, or NTUD, happened as the plainclothes vice sergeant was getting his handgun ready for a training session. There weren't any other officers there at the time, and no one got hurt but the incident sure makes you second-guess the 'accidental' part of an accidental discharge. The bullet launched into the fridge and decided to stay there without causing any further mayhem within the police facility.
The Force Investigation Division (FID) was called to the scene shortly after the misfire to take charge of the situation and unravel how such a mishap could take place within the confines of a police station. Details about the investigation are scant, but the FID's investigation of the mishap will likely seek to guarantee that this kind of NTUD remains a rarity, if not a complete anomaly, within the storied halls of the LAPD.
As the case stands, the LAPD has disclosed no further details about the incident outside of those chilling moments when a firearm goes off unexpectedly, and you're never really too sure what the aftermath will look like even when you're hoping everyone comes out on the other side unscathed.
