The Brightline West high-speed rail initiative, a significant transportation project connecting Las Vegas to Rancho Cucamonga, secured a massive $3 billion federal investment. The project, which will deliver high-speed rail service throughout Southern California's Inland Empire, is considered a milestone for the region's development and mobility. Local leaders gathered this past Monday at the Cucamonga Station to commemorate the occasion, highlighting the anticipated economic boom and job creation expected to invigorate the area.
San Bernardino County and local city officials are optimistic that the rail project will deliver more than just a swift commute to and fro Vegas. In a statement obtained by San Bernardino County’s website, San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors Chair Dawn Rowe remarked, “This high-speed rail system will be a significant economic driver for San Bernardino County while improving connectivity and reducing congestion between here and Las Vegas.” The project has also cleared most of its regulatory hurdles and construction is expected to kick off by early 2024.
With the federal funding now in place, leaders are touting the Brightline West project as a watershed moment for the Inland Empire. The new rail system is projected to support over 11,000 jobs annually and attract $5 billion in local spending, with Rancho Cucamonga slated to receive $300 million of that investment. Mayor L. Dennis Michael of Rancho Cucamonga told San Bernardino County’s website, “This strategic investment in cutting-edge infrastructure not only opens doors to jobs, economic growth, tourism, and commercial ventures but also enhances Southern California’s global connectivity.”
The Cucamonga Station is to be transformed into a comprehensive multimodal transportation hub, potentially serving up to 11 million passengers per year. A new collaboration between the City of Rancho Cucamonga, Ontario International Airport, and various transportation agencies is geared towards maximizing this opportunity. Atif Elkadi, CEO of the Ontario International Airport Authority, highlighted how the project aligns with the airport’s mission to connect people and foster opportunities, stating on San Bernardino County’s website, “These projects align perfectly with Ontario International Airport’s mission of connecting people, places, and opportunities to build a better world.”
