A man suspected of armed robbery was fatally shot by League City police officers outside a Walmart on December 23. The confrontation occurred after the police responded to an alert of a stolen Toyota from the Houston area appearing nearby, according to the Houston Chronicle.
League City law enforcement discovered the silver Toyota Corolla, reported to have been stolen in an aggravated robbery, abandoned in a Walmart parking lot at 1701 West FM 646 Road. They set up surveillance in the area waiting for the suspect to appear. The suspect described by the robbery victim, returned to the vehicle around 4 p.m., as reported by the Houston Chronicle.
Upon the man's approach to the sedan, the officers attempted to make an arrest. "The man produced a handgun," the League City Police Department noted in a release, which led to the officers shooting the suspect. The man was pronounced dead approximately ten minutes after the gunfire exchange.
No additional injuries were reported in the incident that led to the Walmart parking lot being cordoned off for five hours. The involved officers have been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation by the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office, as noted in a statement obtained by Fox 26 Houston.
Further details reveal that after the suspect was shot, officers administered CPR before League City EMS declared the man deceased at the scene. A handgun was also recovered near where the shootout took place, according to League City Public Information Officer Jose Ortega.
