The Manhattan Beach community is on high alert this holiday season as the latest crime statistics reveal a spike in burglaries and thefts. The Manhattan Beach Police Department's weekly crime summary, published today, paints a troubling picture with 22 arrests, 62 crime reports, and a noteworthy rise in vehicle burglaries. Residents are being urged to heed prevention tips to safeguard their homes and belongings as the year-end festivities ramp up.

According to the summary, 15 vehicle break-ins marked the past week, with thieves primarily employing the smash-and-grab technique to make off with valuables. One garage door left ajar invited misfortune as the vehicle within was ransacked, although nothing was taken. Manhattan Beach has also witnessed a rash of brazen retail theft incidents, exemplified by a criminal pattern where suspects enter, pilfer, and then swiftly escape to a waiting vehicle.

The MBPD is currently investigating two notable residential burglaries. In the first instance, a home tented for fumigation was compromised when a thief cut into the tent and forced entry via the front door, resulting in a ransacked primary bedroom and the loss of jewelry. Another residence was burglarized on December 19, with the homeowner returning home to a shattered bathroom window and their primary bedroom turned over. A valuable Rolex watch was reported stolen from the scene.

In response to the surge in crimes, the MBPD has put out a list of crucial safety tips. Recommended measures include installing adequate lighting, securing doors and windows, using alarm systems, and maintaining clear landscaping around windows to discourage would-be burglars. They also suggest building neighborly relationships to keep an eye out, securing valuables, being discreet about travel plans on social media, employing timers for lights, and ensuring garages are locked.

The weekly report issued a reminder for vigilance in holiday shopping, advising shoppers to lock their vehicles and keep valuable items out of sight. The MBPD extends warm wishes for a safe and joyful holiday season while reminding the community to stay alert and protect their property from criminal activities during this vulnerable time.
