The Police Officers Federation of Minneapolis, representing the boots on the ground, is eyeing mediation to hammer out a new collective bargaining agreement with the city.
The union, home to the ranks of cops, sergeants, and lieutenants, has flagged mediation as the next move this month. According to state law, when the city suits can't see eye to eye with their badges, either side can call in the Minnesota Bureau of Mediation Services (BMS) for some neutral ground talks. If BMS gives the nod, they'll call both parties to the table in hopes of breaking the deadlock, officials said.
Their previous contract ended on December 31, 2022, but it's sticking around until both sides can come to terms on a new one. The city's spokespeople say they're ready to roll up their sleeves and dive back into the fray during the forthcoming mediation.
For those looking to stay in the loop, the negotiation play-by-play is up for grabs. "Information on the Police Federation contract negotiations, including documents shared at negotiation sessions, are available on the City’s website," the City of Minneapolis confirmed.
