Entrepreneur and autism advocate Aaliyah Alicia Thompson, who has made history as the first person with autism to own a nail school, is giving back to the community this holiday season with a generous stipend for families with special needs children. As reported by FOX5 Atlanta, Thompson is gifting a $500 holiday stipend to 10 single parents of children with autism, and the deadline to apply is this Friday.
Thompson's gesture stems from a place of understanding and solidarity, owing to her personal journey with autism. A native of Jonesboro, Thompson was diagnosed at the age of 5 and has since emerged as an inspirational figure, graduating top of her class and becoming a member of McDonald's Black and Positively Golden Change Maker Ambassadors, as per FOX5 Atlanta's interview.
Her advocacy led her to the Afro Tech conference, where she was awarded a $10,000 prize. Choosing to pay it forward, Thompson is allocating half of those funds to assist families in need. "Have fun with it. Do what you have to do with the money. Pay rent. Whatever. It's Christmas," Thompson told AOL News, indicating the flexibility of the gift's use to ease the financial burden during the holiday stretch.
The initiative reflects more than just charitable giving; it's a nod to the potential within the autism community. Thompson's nail school on North Avenue in Jonesboro is a testament to her commitment, welcoming students from across the spectrum to learn a viable trade. "The reason why I opened up a nail school is because they can learn a trade, just like everyone else," said Thompson, according to FOX5 Atlanta.
Parents interested in the holiday stipend can visit Thompson's Instagram page, access the link in her bio, and submit a short paragraph detailing how the money would make a positive impact on their family. The giving spirit of the season is alive and well, with Thompson's act of kindness serving as a beacon of hope for those facing the challenges of raising children with special needs.
