Breaking through age barriers, Minnie Payne, a nonagenarian from College Station, Texas, recently marked a monumental moment by earning her master's degree at the ripe age of 90. The University of North Texas celebrated her achievement as the oldest graduate to not only walk the stage last weekend but also to complete her degree at their institution, as reported by Good Morning America.
Her academic pursuits weren't a delayed afterthought. Payne graduated from high school back in 1950 and gained considerable professional experience across different jobs, such as court reporting and substitute teaching, before heading back to academia. After crossing the initial threshold by obtaining her undergraduate degree at age 73 from Texas Woman's University, Payne flexed her writing muscles, working in the field for nearly 16 years.
The motivation for Payne's late-in-life academic journey is rooted in her upbringing. Born into a community soaked in poverty in South Carolina, she grew up in a setting where education was not regarded as essential. Payne recalled her childhood environment, saying, "We were poor, but we didn’t realize we were poor because everybody else was in the same boat," she stated, per The Dallas Express.
Commendations for Payne's dedication are widespread, with Billy Roessler, assistant dean of graduate studies at UNT’s Toulouse Graduate School, applauding her commitment, "She was committed throughout the program to getting the education, knowledge, and skills that she desired," he stated.
