The streets of Newark were lined not with festive cheers but with flashing blue lights this past weekend as the Newark Police clamped down hard on DUI offenders. According to a Nixle report, the DUI/DL Checkpoint operation led to three arrests, including two DUI apprehensions, one of which was tied to an outstanding DUI warrant and the lack of a court-ordered ignition interlock device. One unlucky soul ended the night in cuffs for a possession of a controlled substance charge.

Officers at the checkpoint, which was operational from 6:00 PM to 2:00 AM at the intersection of Thornton Avenue and Newark Boulevard, weren't just there to spoil the party. They, armed with breathalyzers and a keen eye for lawbreaking, also handed out 21 citations for either unlicensed driving or commandeering a vehicle with a suspended or revoked license.

Checkpoints like these aren't just a random occurrence; they're strategically placed in locations that have been marred by DUI-related mishaps. The strategy is clear: to promote public safety and discourage the public from even thinking about driving under the influence. "The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints is to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off roads," the report said.

Determined to keep the festivities safe, or at least free from the taint of intoxicated drivers, the next DUI checkpoint is already on the books for the National Summer DUI Mobilization in late 2024. The financial muscle behind the operation didn't come from the city's coffers but rather from a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, funneled down through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
