An aviation incident shook the city of Plano last month when a plane piloted by 87-year-old Monroe McDonald crashed in a shopping center parking lot, leading to his death. The National Transportation Safety Board has now released a preliminary report on the November 21 crash, providing new insights into the tragic event.
The report confirmed that McDonald, an experienced pilot who was just days shy of his 88th birthday, was trying to quickly make a second landing attempt when his left wing dipped, sending the Mooney M20C into a near-vertical descent. According to a friend's testimony, as cited by NBC DFW, McDonald had been en route from Eagle Roost Airpark in Aguila, Arizona, to visit family and friends in Plano.
The details of the crash scene painted a grim picture, with surveillance footage showing the airplane descending precipitously before crashing outside Mama's Daughter's Diner, approximately a quarter-mile from its intended destination at Air Park-Dallas. A post-impact fire ensued, which not only consumed the aircraft but also spread to an unoccupied vehicle in the vicinity.
Despite the severity of the crash, McDonald was remembered by friends as a "perfectionist" in the cockpit and a "very safe guy" who made it a point to fly weekly. His contributions to aviation had previously been recognized by the FAA for 50 years of piloting and aircraft operations, as per WFAA.
The NTSB investigation is still ongoing, aiming to uncover the definitive causes behind this tragic incident that took the life of a dedicated aviator and left the local community in mourning.
