Oakland International Airport is gearing up for a busy holiday season, with projections tipping over 500,000 travelers through its gates from December 15 to January 1. According to a release by the airport, the spike in holiday traffic marks one of the peak travel periods, with the busiest bustle expected on December 22. Officials at OAK are rolling out the red carpet, quite literally, with a gift-wrapping station set to make life easier for those lugging presents through security.
"After a busy Thanksgiving, we highly recommend that travelers who Park OAK reserve their parking ahead of time," announced Craig Simon, Interim Director of Aviation at the Port of Oakland. The airport is also laying out some holiday cheer with "special in-terminal holiday activities." Revealing the details, Oakland International Airport states that once passengers have their bags checked and bodies scanned, they can rewrap those gifts at a station between Terminals 1 and 2.
The airport, ensuring a smooth travel experience, advises passengers to check in online and monitor their flight status proactively. For those opting to drive, a week-long reservation for parking could save some holiday headaches, with discounts for those staying over five days and a warning that non-reservation parking is limited. En route, Oakland International Airport makes an enticing offer to parents, promising a complimentary holiday gift bag at the wrapping station specifically for those with children in tow, alongside a selfie station and live local music to keep the general holiday spirits high.
With such diligent planning, there's little left to chance, yet travelers will still need to pad their schedules, arriving two hours before domestic flights and three for international flights. OAK's strategic placement in the East Bay promises all but seamless access to the San Francisco Bay Area’s top employers, sights, and delights. The Port of Oakland, which operates the airport alongside a seaport and 20 miles of waterfront, casts itself as a linchpin in the region's economy, supporting more than 98,000 jobs and constituting a $174 billion economic impact.
