Oakland Airport Unveils New Eco-Friendly Seating in Terminal 1 Amid Passenger Experience EnhancementsSource: Oakland International Airport

Oakland International Airport is sprucing up just in time for the holiday travel rush. The popular transit hub has decked out Terminal 1 with brand-spanking-new furniture, riding the wave of its recent makeover that included a plush new carpet. Craig Simon, Interim Director of Aviation at the Port of Oakland, told Oakland Airport that these upgrades are all about enhancing the passenger experience for those flying through the East Bay's skies.

Terminal 1 isn't just any old part of the airport. Since opening its doors in 1962, it's been the departure and arrival point for countless travelers on airlines like Hawaiian, Delta, Alaska, Spirit, Volaris, and Allegiant. And now, Southwest Airlines is also getting in on the Terminal 1 action. But it's not just a about a pretty face – the new seats from Vitra are also eco-friendly powerhouses, pulling all their production juice from hydropower and strapping solar panels on for good measure.

Passengers will find themselves plopping down on over a thousand new seats – including couch seating for those who like a soft side to their waiting game and chaise lounges for a little sprawl space. These aren't your grandma's plastic airport chairs; every standard seat comes with a comfy, cleanable polyurethane shell. And soon, they'll be juiced up with charging stations to keep those gadgets going.

The old, well-loved chairs that did a 15-year stretch serving travelers? They're up for grabs, available to the highest bidder through a third party. Looking forward, the airport's got grand plans for Terminal 1 – with ticket counters and restrooms next on the makeover list. These projects are still in the blueprint phase, but they're coming down the runway.
