Officials announced a temporary closure of Oakland Cemetery slated for January 2024 to make way for significant upgrades and renovations.

According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the foundation running the cemetery confirmed that nearly two miles of roads will be repaved, aging water lines replaced, and new irrigation systems for its gardens installed. The cemetery will also see improvements in drainage and soil stability, alongside the necessary gutter repairs.

The public reopening of both the cemetery and museum store is anticipated to take place on February 1, 2024. And for those needing to visit loved ones interred, arrangements can be made by contacting the cemetery's main office.

On top of the immediate refurbishments, there's a buzz about the progress on a new state-of-the-art visitor center, projected to debut in 2025. This welcome addition to Oakland Cemetery promises to expand educational and community offerings, as reported by WSB-TV. The financing fueling these improvements stems from the City of Atlanta's 2022 Move Atlanta Forward infrastructure bond.
