Tension gripped the vicinity of Palo Alto High School today as police responded to reports of a man seen brandishing a handgun on a bike path behind the educational institution. According to a tweet from the Palo Alto Police, the incident prompted school staff to enforce a "shelter in place" protocol while officers scoured the scene. "Officers are in the area of Palo Alto High School investigating reports of a male seen with a handgun on the bike path to the rear of the school," reported the police department's Twitter account.
Despite the initial scare, further developments appeared scarce as the search continued. No additional sightings of the armed individual were confirmed. "Thus far, we have not received any additional reports of the man being seen," the department stated. The suspect was preliminarily described as a Hispanic male adult, notable for tattoos on his arms. Witnesses reportedly saw him pointing the handgun at passing cars along Alma Street.
The response to the situation showcased swift action taken to ensure student safety. "School staff have chosen to place the campus into a 'shelter in place' status while our officers investigate," the authorities communicated. This step demonstrates the protocols put in place to sharply react to potential threats in school environments.
Update as of 12:15 p.m.: The “shelter in place” at the school has been lifted, with no additional witnesses having seen the suspect since around 11:30 a.m., and with the campus itself having been checked and cleared. Officers will stay in the area out of an abundance of caution.

Consequently, officers have tirelessly continued to canvass the area but have yet to successfully apprehend, or even positively identify the suspect. "Officers remain in the area now but have not located either the suspect himself, or even any additional witnesses to this event, since it was initially reported around 11:30 a.m.," the Palo Alto Police tweeted. The situation remains under investigation, and the community is on high alert as the search for the reported gunman is underway.
