Chaos erupted on the streets of Piedmont yesterday when a stolen vehicle barreled through the city, leading to multiple crashes and a wild foot chase. The Piedmont Police Department reported that at approximately 4:30 pm, dispatch was notified of a stolen vehicle entering the area via Moraga Ave. The incident began when officers encountered the vehicle at Highland Ave, and the suspect led them on a dangerous high-speed pursuit.
The chase quickly turned disastrous as the stolen vehicle collided with four others while speeding down Moraga. According to the Piedmont Police Department’s social media post, the driver didn’t stop there, he abandoned the wrecked vehicle and continued to escape on foot. The suspect’s effort to vanish into the urban landscape was thwarted when he tried to slip away on an AC Transit bus.
The suspect’s attempt at blending in with the bus commuters fell flat when officers, tipped off by the vigilant onlookers, swooped in to arrest him as he attempted to board the bus. The unnamed individual now faces a slew of charges.
The Piedmont Police Department praised the community’s help in apprehending the suspect. "Great job by all involved," the department exclaimed, commending the teamwork that led to the rapid capture of the fugitive. The suspect is currently being held at Santa Rita Jail, dealing with charges that include auto theft, failing to stop, hit and run, and resisting arrest, further evidence that in the end, recklessness on the road leads to nowhere but a dead end.
